As part of their expansion, they are seeking a talented Legal Counsel specializing in ship finance matters to join their dynamic team.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a proactive and experienced Legal Counsel with 2-3 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) to join our team in a newly created role focusing on ship finance matters. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing legal advice and support to our finance and operations teams, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and mitigating legal risks associated with our financing activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance on a wide range of ship finance transactions, including vessel acquisitions, refinancing, leasing, and structured finance arrangements.
  • Structure, draft, review, and negotiate complex finance agreements, including loan agreements, security documents, and charter party agreements.
  • Conduct due diligence reviews and risk assessments to identify legal issues and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks and industry standards.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including finance, operations, and risk management teams, to review and negotiate commercial agreements and contracts related to ship financing activities.
  • Ensure that contractual arrangements are in line with legal requirements, company policies, and industry best practices, while effectively managing legal risks and liabilities.
  • Stay abreast of relevant laws, regulations, and industry developments impacting ship finance transactions, and provide proactive advice and recommendations to ensure compliance.
  • Assist in developing and implementing compliance policies, procedures, and training initiatives to enhance awareness and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with other members of the legal team and various departments across the organization to provide holistic legal support and contribute to the achievement of strategic business objectives.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, including legal advisors, financial institutions, and regulatory authorities, to facilitate smooth and efficient execution of ship finance transactions.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Qualified solicitor with 2-3 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in ship finance or maritime law, preferably gained within a reputable law firm or in-house legal department of a shipping company.
  • Strong knowledge of ship finance principles, commercial contracts, and relevant regulatory frameworks, with a demonstrated ability to apply legal concepts to real-world business scenarios.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal issues clearly and concisely to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing legal risks.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining a high standard of work quality and professionalism.
  • Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and external partners across different functional areas and geographic locations.
