Job Description

Overview:
We are seeking a seasoned Legal Counsel specializing in Intellectual Property (IP) and Research Collaboration to join our client, an Institute of Higher Learning. As a key member of our research department, you will provide expert legal counsel and support primarily in the areas of research collaboration and intellectual property matters. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in advising on IP issues, including enforcement, infringement, protection, and licensing, with a strong background in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secrets law. Additionally, experience in research and development, higher education, and advising on research collaboration agreements will be highly valued. The successful candidate should ideally come with a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience (PQE).

Responsibilities:
  • Provide timely and strategic legal advice on a wide range of intellectual property matters, including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret issues.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate research collaboration agreements, joint development agreements, licensing agreements, and other related agreements to ensure the protection of the institution's intellectual property rights and interests.
  • Develop and implement strategies for the enforcement and protection of the institution's intellectual property rights, including initiating and managing IP litigation when necessary.
  • Conduct due diligence reviews related to intellectual property matters in connection with research collaborations, technology transfers, and other initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of institutional policies and procedures related to intellectual property, research collaboration, technology transfer, and commercialization.
  • Provide training and educational sessions to faculty, staff, and students on intellectual property rights, research collaboration best practices, and relevant legal issues.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with intellectual property matters and research collaborations to protect the institution's interests.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and external partners, to facilitate successful research collaborations and ensure compliance with legal requirements.

Qualifications:
  • 7 years PQE with significant experience in intellectual property law, preferably with a focus on patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secrets.
  • JD/LLB from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Bar in Singapore
  • Experience in advising on research collaboration agreements, technology transfer, and commercialization in the context of higher education or research institutions.
  • Strong understanding of intellectual property law and its application within the academic and research environment.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
