As they continue to expand their operations, they are seeking a skilled Legal Counsel/Claims Handler to join our legal team their London or Cyprus office and support the General Counsel in handling FDD (Freight Demurrage and Defense) and P&I (Protection and Indemnity) insurance coverage matters.
Role Summary:
As the Legal Counsel/Claims Handler, you will play a crucial role in protecting the company's interests and mitigating risks associated with maritime claims. Your primary responsibilities will involve providing legal support and advice related to FDD and P&I insurance coverage matters, managing claims, and ensuring efficient resolution of disputes. Key Responsibilities:
- FDD and P&I Claims Management: Investigate and handle FDD and P&I claims, from initial notification through to resolution, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and insurance policies.
- Legal Advisory: Provide expert legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders, including the General Counsel, claims teams, and other departments, on various legal matters related to shipping, maritime law, insurance coverage, and risk management.
- Documentation and Case Management: Prepare and review legal documents, contracts, and settlement agreements pertaining to claims, ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal standards.
- Negotiations and Settlements: Engage in negotiations with claimants, external legal representatives, and insurers to achieve favorable settlements while representing the company's interests effectively.
- Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Evaluate potential risks related to claims and insurance matters and recommend strategies for risk mitigation and avoidance.
- Compliance: Stay up-to-date with changes in relevant laws, regulations, and industry practices affecting the shipping and insurance sectors, ensuring compliance with all applicable legal requirements.
- Collaborative Approach: Work closely with other members of the legal team, claims professionals, and relevant departments to maintain an integrated approach to legal and claims matters.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Law or related field (legal qualifications will be well-regarded but not a must)
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in FDD and P&I insurance coverage matters, preferably gained from a P&I club or in-house claims roles within the shipping or maritime industry.
- Solid understanding of maritime law, insurance regulations, and claims handling processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to approach complex legal issues pragmatically.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Proven track record of handling claims efficiently and achieving successful outcomes.
- High level of attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Reporting:
This role reports directly to the General Counsel and will work closely with the legal team, claims teams, and other relevant departments.
